Aqeeqah and Eid Qurbani: The Difference and the Options

Aqeeqah is the sacrifice of an animal in thanks to Allah for the birth of a child, traditionally on the seventh day. Eid Qurbani is performed on the 10th, 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. On Qurbani Centre they are separate options with separate pages, names and dates; questions about the religious ruling are for a qualified scholar.

Two different occasions

Aqeeqah marks the birth of a child. The What is Aqeeqah? page explains the meaning in short form. Eid Qurbani belongs to the days of Eid ul Adha. The website keeps the two apart so that a donor does not choose the wrong one.

How the options differ on the website

  • Eid Qurbani options (Qurbani category): Goat, Buffalo Share and Full Buffalo, performed on 10th to 12th Dhul Hijjah in the order bookings are received.
  • Aqeeqah options (Aqeeqah category): Aqeeqah Goat and Aqeeqah Full Buffalo. The Aqeeqah Goat page states that traditionally two goats are offered for a boy and one for a girl, and the name entered is the child’s name.

The Aqeeqah options are usually performed on a Wednesday; another day can be arranged on request. This differs from Eid Qurbani, which is performed only on the days of Eid ul Adha.

Names, changes and refunds

On the Aqeeqah pages the name entered is the child’s name. Changes or cancellation are possible up to 3 days before the date of the sacrifice, with a full refund. For Eid Qurbani the cut-off is 3 days before Eid ul Adha. The refund and cancellation policy covers both.

What stays the same

For both, the booking is confirmed once the amount is received by bank transfer, the sacrifice is made by an experienced Muslim slaughterer, the meat is distributed to people in need and not delivered to the donor, and once the sacrifice is performed a confirmation is sent to you on WhatsApp. Animals are goats and buffalo; a goat is at least one year old and a buffalo at least two years old.

Choosing the day for an Aqeeqah

The Aqeeqah options are usually performed on a Wednesday, and another day can be arranged on request. If the family has a particular day in mind, contact support with the order number soon after booking so that the request can be recorded.

Because the cancellation window for an Aqeeqah is tied to the date of the sacrifice, the date matters for refunds as well: changes or cancellation are possible up to 3 days before that date.

Questions for a scholar

This page does not determine the religious ruling, timing, animal selection or number of animals for an individual situation, and it does not compare the two in religious terms. For guidance on the applicable ruling, consult a qualified scholar. For a ruling on your own circumstances, please consult a qualified local scholar.
